As someone who has been shooting archery for over 25 years I know how important it is to have proper arm protection, especially if you’re new to archery or if you’re shooting a high poundage bow.
I had a couple of friends who were interested in learning how to shoot but I didn’t have enough arm guards for everyone to be able to shoot at the same time. I’ve had the leather arm guard I use for over 20 years and I wanted to create a similar product myself so I traced out the outline of my tried-and-true arm guard and made a test mockup for us to use. I took it out to the range for a trial run and I brought along my 67lb Longbow which can be seen in some of the product photos above, figuring that I might as well test it with the hardest hitting string I’ve got. I will say that intentionally shooting my bow incorrectly so as to hit my arm on purpose was a new and uncomfortable experience. As it turned out, the first attempt was much too thin and I received a nice bruise for my efforts. While it was far better than having the bowstring slap your bare forearm I felt that my friends would be none too happy with the sore arm and colorful bruises which they would inevitably earn while learning how to shoot properly. I headed home and went back to work designing a similar, albeit, thicker arm guard and then returned back to the range to repeat my testing. Thankfully, the new and improved arm guard was thick enough to withstand all of the abuse I was throwing at it, my arm was perfectly safe, and there was no physical damage to the tooling! I can only assume that after years of use there will inevitably be scuffing or wear on the tooling where the string comes in contact with the leather; however, after shooting 3 to 4 dozen shots and having the string solidly wack my arm guard every time I can safely say that I am very pleased with the results.
Our leather arm guards are made from Full Grain Vegetable Tanned Leather which is the highest quality and most durable cut of the leather you can purchase. Full Grain Leather is the strongest of all cuts of leather, it retains and displays the history of the animal – the scars, scrapes, rough spots, and character that is unique to each animal. We use Full Grain Leather because it is the toughest and most rugged cut of leather available and will last for decades.
